Welcome to Vision Quest: a seminar provider and consultation services for occupational therapy intervention for the patient with low vision.

The low vision seminar is entitled "Occupational Therapy Intervention for the Patient With Low Vision". These two day workshops focus on the older adult and people living with diabetes. The low vision seminar is also available online.

This low vision seminar will be presented at various locations throughout the year around the country and will be open to specific locations upon requests.


This intensive two day workshop is intended to provide the OT or COTA with the necessary skills for working with older adults and people with diabetes who have low vision.

 This course provides heavy emphasis on strategies for evaluation and treatment ideas for every aspect of ADL/IADL function for the patient with low vision and explains how specific eye diseases affect visual functioning.

 Through a combination of interesting lecture, visual aids, hands-on labs, and demonstration of devices, this course strives to ensure the clinician will understand low vision principles for carryover with application to the clinical setting for program development.

 Included will be compensatory techniques, including use of other senses and instruction for use of remaining vision, environmental modifications, use of assistive devices and establishing a network of appropriate community resources.

 A screening tool that facilitates testing for visual problems will also be presented to enable the clinician to easily recognize when vision hinders function.

PREREQUISITES: None

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL: Entry level - one year or less of clinical experience working as an occupational therapist or certified occupational therapy assistant.

AOTA CLASSIFCATION CODE: Category 2

Refunds/Cancellation Policy: Participants would get a full refund upon cancellation by provider.  All cancellations by participant require written notice within 10 days of course.  Tuition less a $50.00 administration fee will be refunded.  No refunds made after this time period.  No refunds will be made if course is in progress and interrupted by issues beyond our control.   We reserve the right to cancel this course and will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by registrant except for tuition.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Be able to list disciplines involved in the low vision rehabilitation team and identify delineation between roles.
  2. Describe changes that occur due to eye diseases and their effects upon visual functioning and occupational performance
  3. Identify anatomical parts of the visual system
  4. List eye diseases that cause low vision in the older adult
  5. Identify various types of tools to assess visual functioning
  6. Recognize basic components of PRL retraining for compensation with vision loss
  7. Recognize differences between magnification devices, optical properties and their relationship to visual functioning
  8. List components of an occupational therapy evaluation for low vision patients and intervention strategies
  9. Describe psychosocial issues that hinder occupational performance and interventions to engage patients for enhancing quality of life
  10. Identify intervention strategies for self-management of diabetes for patients with low vision and recognize the scope of occupational therapy when working with this population
  11. Be able to list low vision terminology and recognize appropriate documentation
    and billing guidelines for reimbursement
  12. Differentiate intervention strategies between different treatment settings for program implementation
  13. The participants have to turn in a course evaluation following completion of all course work including all lectures and labs with demonstration of competency of key lecture points.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes:  Each participant will be graded on a pass/fail system for competency during key points of lecture during labs prior to being awarded continuing education certificate.
